On December 16th, HP announced that it would concurrently support both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray technologies while also joining the HD-DVD Promotions Group. After having expressed displeasure with Blu-Ray’s lack of support for "Mandatory Managed Copy" and "iMC" DRM technologies, the Blu-Ray disk association did adopt MMC, but still not iMC. According to its press release, HP believes that, "By joining the HD-DVD Promotions Group and continuing work with the Blu-ray Disc Association, HP will be in a better position to assess true development costs and, ultimately, provide the best and most affordable solution for consumers." Although I’d really rather not see another format war, I’d also really rather not see another standard in which I’m technically buying the media, not the content and therefore have no legal way to backup my legitimately purchased movies. Kudos to HP for taking a pro-consumer stance on this one, although there are a million technicalities associated with MMC technology. We’ll just have to see how this one plays out.
