cablefree.jpgUsing a laptop wirelessly around the home or office is great, but most of us still have to go back to our desks every time we need to print something, access an external drive, etc.  Belkin is trying to change that with the announcement of their CableFree USB Hub.

The hub itself, just like standard USB hubs, will sit on your desk and you’ll keep all of your USB devices hooked into it.  The USB dongle will plug into your laptop, giving you access to any devices that are plugged into the hub.  No more walking back and forth to hook up to a USB device!

Belkin is using FreeScale’s Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology in their CableFree device.  I can only hope that UWB goes the way of Wi-Fi, and that manufacturers begin integrating the adapters directly into laptops.  And with speeds "100 times faster than Bluetooth," you won’t notice any lag even when streaming audio/video from a USB drive.

Upon release this spring, the Belkin CableFree package will be available for around $130.  Kind of high-priced, but as much as I use my laptop all around my home it would definitely make my life much easier.  Instant access to a printer, external hard drive, MP3 player, or whatever else comes along without having to get up off my couch…. that’s the life!
