“Nobody Ever Got Fired For Buying Microsoft”

Unless you work at Apple, your corporate IT department probably lives by this credo. And, thus, the real reason that Palm has gone to "the dark side".

With the introduction of the Palm Treo 700w (through Verizon), Palm has embraced a monumental change in an effort to breath life into its dying franchise. They have forsaken their first love — the Palm OS — and adopted a Microsoft OS-driven system. Ideology and the "Zen" aside, it comes down to maintaining some sort of value in the corporate stock, and Palm swallowed what little pride they had left and joined the Microsoft wave.

The Treo 700w will certainly help Palm in corporate settings — combining the power of Microsoft with the attractiveness of the Treo line. Is it the best implementation of Windows Mobile — I hear not. Is it the best smart phone period — I hear not too. But, it will be a raging success because most people don’t buy the best and brightest — they buy popular.

Oh, and as an aside, Verizon has crippled the Bluetooth dial-up networking (DUN) on the 700w to limit users from using their phones as laptop modems.
