OK, I have been giving the new Opera 8.5 Beta a spin on my Kjam. So far I am not impressed. Please be advised I have only got a few hours, so I may be overlooking some things.

Like most programs with choices, the annoying, this app not your default app, want it to be box. After saying no, Opera loaded a portal page that is on the machine. Next I go strait to my favorite site, Aximsite.com! I was greeted with some bad rendering I wasn’t happy with. I am not sure if my mobile version is "Opera Friendly", but it sure did seem that way.

PIE on Left and Opera on Right.

Now the text is larger than it should be and the images are all out of whack. Aximsite’s mobile version uses 100% tables and not CSS for formatting, maybe that’s the problem?

Next I visited Mobilitysite, same thing…

PIE on Left and Opera on Right.

Same verdict…

Many sites I browsed showed same problems as well. I will do more checking and seeing if I can fix via tweaks, but so far I am less than impressed.

Another thing, and it may be unrelated, My Kjam has soft reset itself 2x since install. I am going to keep an eye on that since its never done that before. (I also installed Egress today as well, so…)

  • Shoe from Aximsite
Opera is okay with me although I am having the problem with the garbled text that others in the Opera feedback forum are experiencing. I haven't had much time to play with it yet but I have found that it can't open the Journal Bar cache files! All I can do with that is open copy the address on from the address bar and paste it into PIE.

  • Wow, Opera is much better than PIE for me.
I am using an X51v with Opera 8.5.

  • Can you make me a screen shot?
  • Maybe it's a problem with it picking up the mobile site... I'm not mobile at the moment, but saved a copy of the front page of aximsite (regular) as a html file, copied it and the pages over to my sd card and opened them with PIE and Opera.

And I've got to day the difference is amazing. Opera makes it look like a real webpage.. everything fits, readably, on the screen and all i have to do is scroll down. It does make a bit of a mess of the tables for the last 10 posts though. (And it looks like it's VGA aware, so it may not be as nice on the Kjam).. Still it looks like theres plenty of fun to be had investigating this :)
