People are buying more and more music online these days.
Last year, sales tripled from 2004 to $1.1 billion!

About 60% of those sales are for music stores such as iTunes.
The rest was song ringtones for mobile phones.

This makes digital music about 6% of the revenue for the music industry.

I much prefer to have my music digital.
I love the choice of picking and choosing individual songs or getting the whole CD and I can take them with me in my pocket instead of needing CDs that can get scratched and damaged.

  • Yeah, I was really surprised too. But I guess a lot of people I know like to buy a bunch of ringtones. Still never would have imagined it being such a high percentage.

Okay, I can understand the sales of digital music being really high. But according to the facts presented here, ringtone sales must be about a $440 MILLION industry. That's just freaking nuts.

So not only are people's crazy ringtones annoying me everyday, but they're also representing about half a billion dollars of wasted money that could have been put to good use somewhere. A couple of years ago even, you have no idea how much trouble I had to go through on a new phone to download a ringtone that sound like *gasp* a RING. :)
