dreamhome.jpg Sorry for the lack of updates today! My wife and I have been making some plans.

When I got out of the US Navy after almost 10 years service, my credit was shaky and I took a $10 an hour job working on the University of Alabama’s multimedia classrooms and their Jumbotron. We purchased a very modest, very old, very small starter home. We through money at it renovating and decided to move on a couple years later. I rented this house out to dead beat renters for a couple years at a $25/mo loss until I could find a buyer. During that time and a year more, we’ve been content with this home. Its 2300 square foot, 3 bedroom 2.5 baths, but it was build built in 1979. It has a formal dining room and a Den. There are some great things about this house, but there are a couple things we don’t like.

Today, we had an installer come to the house to look at our kitchen to see about "modernizing" and possibly making it larger. We were very dissappointed with options. One of my biggest complaints with our house is the Den and Living Room are not really big. Our den has a fireplace on one wall, a bathroom door on another wall, and our garage door on the 3rd wall. The fourth wall is a 1/2 where our kitchen overlooks it. The opening is a step down into the den. The problem is that after our Sectional Sofa, there is NO ROOM for a kick ass TV and entertainment center. I WANT THESE THINGS! So we decided today that it was time to buy another house.

Wish us luck!

  • Chris, we are going through thhe same type of thing except that instead of having problems with our house, we are tired of the neighbors. We are buying 7.59 acres of raw Florida land with no neighbors except horses and cows. We will be building the house of our dreams there amidst the alligators and wild boars. Good luck on your endeavor. I can't believe how cheap houses are in your area. For a house of the size you are talking about in a decent neighborhood here, you would be looking at over $400,000 to a half million. Get a good house while you can!

    Chris,
How about loading some floor plans and room pictures? Maybe we can offer suggestions.
My wife and I bought a 1964 raised ranch almost 4 years ago, and didn't move in for almost 5 months because we renovated.
We took out some walls, between the kitchen and living room, and kitchen and dining room. Kind of an out of the box change, compared to what other people in the neighborhood have done.
My father-in-law drew up the plans (retired engineer from Cat. and former Navy man).
Let us see what you have, if you want to stay where you are, and get some rooms modified.

    Thanks guys!
A new 2300-2500 sqft brick house in a good neighborhood is 230-250k. This house is 2300sqft but its only worth around 150-160k.

Good luck with the house hunting, Chris. How is the market around Tuscaloosa now? I'd love to get something out here, but it looks like we'll probably be in an apartment for a bit after the wedding.... save up some cash for awhile and get enough for a decent downpayment on something.

There's just not a good market around here, as prices have skyrocketed even in the little over a year I've been out here. Even the further-out areas are well over $100/sqft now, so even a decent 1600-1700 sqft house is pushing $200K here. I'm not getting paid that kinda money. haha :)

Anyhow good luck man. I'll have to come check it out once you find a place and get settled in!
