A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Day 1 with Nokia N70: First Impressions

N70MobilitySiteMain.jpg You will probably remember a little while back Chris’s intro to the N70 and his first impressions plus further impressions on it, along with his closing line that Gray Rentz will be doing some more testing.

Today I received the phone and I am going to be giving you my first impressions for Day 1 of the N70.

Out of the Box
The first time you pull your new device out of its box is always a big moment, so I always like to mention how I felt when taking the device out of the box. The N70 I found right in front of me when I flipped open the top on the box, and frankly it looked amazing. It is small, yet has a large screen and very elegant layout (unlike some of the other Nokia phones). The phone is all silver with some shiny silver around the screen and d-pad which adds a bit of glamour to the N70.

Getting Ready to Use
First steps with the N70 were very easy. I slid back the back cover while pressing a small button on the bottom of the back and was greeted with the bay for a battery and SIM card. After putting in my SIM card, I popped the battery in and put the back on to get ready to start the phone up for the first time.

Software First Impressions
After flashing the Nokia logo and finishing starting up I was greeted with a decent looking background with a few icons on it (for calendar, contacts, camera, etc.). Surprisingly there was no icon for menu and it took me awhile to find the small menu button that is along side the number pad. The whole menu/software system is big into using icons on a grid of 3 icons by 3 icons. The icons are for different settings, getting to contacts, extra programs, games, web, etc. Overall very simplistic, but it seems to get the job done.

Thats all for my first look at the N70, but I will be keeping a journal for a few days with my experiences (as Chris is doing with the Palm Treo), so check back again tomorrow!

How do you switch off the very loud welcome tone ?!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Gray Rentz
    Thanks for the tips!
  • I see that Chris passed the N70 along for another perspective. I have been using it now for about a month and have used Series 60 devices for several years. Here are a couple of tips that aren't obvious that may help you out.

    (1) After pressing the menu key once and getting into the Menu. Press the soft key for Options and then you can switch to a list view instead of a 3x3 if you like this format better. BTW, in 3x3 view you can simply tap the number keys 1-9 to go to the application without moving around with the directional pad.

    (2) This same Options menu allows you to move apps to folders so you can customize the setup of your menu.

    (3) When you are at the main display you can press and hold the # key to toggle between the Silent and General profiles.

    (4) Go to Tools>Settings>Phone>Standby Mode to customize the left and right soft keys and the applications appearing in the active standby bar. Active standby mode is great on the Nseries devices.

Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions or need assistance with the device.
