What will they think of next, mobile concerts? You betcha!

On Thursday, Cingular launched a concert series called "Cingular Sounds Live," which will have concerts that are available to customers on their 3G-compatibe phones via the upcoming Cingular Video service.  "So what?" you might ask, since other carriers have had on-demand video for awhile now.  Well, what makes this different is the manner in which these concerts actually become available for mobile viewing in the first place.

Cingular isn’t just going to a band’s concert and recording the video.  The company is actually hosting their own invitation-only concerts, featuring popular artists, for the sole purpose of recording the event for mobile distribution.  The first Cingular Sounds Live concert was actually hosted on Thursday, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the launch of Cingular Video rather soon.

This sounds like the first step toward wireless carriers not only offering third-party content in a mobile stream, but also offering a fairly diverse variety their own exclusive content as well.  This could possibly become the video equivalent of satellite radio, which currently has many consumers basing their service decision off of which company has a better selection of exclusive content.  Just imagine consumers basing their cellular service decision not off of phone features/services, but off of which carrier has a better selection of exclusive video streams.

I think this is definitely a division of Cingular to follow closely, as it could be the start of a new trend from mobile content providers.
