Dell buying Alienware? I doubt it…

This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.Last Friday, the Inquirer ran a story speculating that Dell may buy Alienware. After reading this article, I called up my Dell contact and it was news to her. She did not deny this, but being that she seemed as shocked as I was, I don’t think there is any truth to this. Of course, I knew that Bellsouth would eventually be bought out or merged with at&t, but how fast and sudden it happened was news to me!
Why would Dell purchase a brand that it rivals with the XPS line? No, I am not saying the Dell XPS line is "as good as" the Alienware line, but they are doing quite good at this time. Why would Dell spend a ton of cash to eliminate a competitor? There will be another to follow right behind them anyhow.
Some comments on the blog that originated this rumor seem to indicate that this is still a possibility. I put this in the same class as Motorola releasing the Q before we forget about what it is.
In a statement sent in to the Inquirer by Alienware, they danced around the question with presision.
"Alienware can not and will not comment on any speculative stories such as the one that appeared on Rahul Sood’s blog yesterday. While we do believe that the story is ultimately a strong positive reinforcement of the Alienware brand and the company’s success, we will not comment on speculation or potential future events. As always, Alienware is committed to offering consumers and businesses with the best high-performance, innovative PC products on the market and we remain manically focused on that goal."
