German software maker SoftMaker just announced a new release of its flagship word processor, TextMaker 2006 for Windows. This new release is a free download, in the form of a service pack, for users of previous versions of TextMaker 2006.
TextMaker 2006 offers the same features as Microsoft Word 2003 — at a fraction of the price! It comes with advanced functions such as AutoShapes, WordArt, balloon comments, and Track Changes.
But TextMaker does not limit itself to Microsoft Windows. It is
also under development for Linux, Pocket PCs (Windows Mobile), Windows CE.NET, and Qtopia.
One of TextMaker’s main strengths is its superior compatibility with the Microsoft Word ".DOC" file format. Users won’t find another word processor that is as capable of handling complex Microsoft Word files as TextMaker 2006. Many of the new features in TextMaker 2006 have been designed with the goal of
allowing TextMaker users to work seamlessly in Microsoft Word-dominated environments.
As a member of the OpenDocument Format Alliance (odfalliance.org), SoftMaker takes pride in its support of the OpenDocument file format: TextMaker now reads OpenDocument files with high fidelity, and saving in this format is being worked onby SoftMaker’s developers right now.
The Windows version of TextMaker 2006 is shipping. Public beta versions for Pocket PCs, Linux, and Windows CE.NET will be released in the coming weeks.
TextMaker 2006 comes with user interfaces in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Hungarian, Turkish, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese. DIGY
TextMaker 2006 for Windows carries a suggested retail price of US$ 49.95 (49.95 Euro).
