A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

U3 Platform – I am sold on it!

u3.jpgThis is true MOBILITY!
I am reviewing a couple flash drives that use the U3 platform and I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed! I have one right here that I have loaded up with Firefox, Thunderbird, Trillian, Skype, and a few other made for U3 applications. Now I can go to any PC with a USB port and I have all my programs and data right on one stick. I can pop the drive in and the drive comes alive with a pop menu to launch my programs or I can just use it like a regular flashdrive. When I am done, I hit eject and I can grab it and move on without leaving a single trace behind!

The only real dilemma I am faced with when using this new found technology is Outlook. I rely on Outlook heavily for my PIM function and syncing my mobile devices. In theory, I can switch to the Free Firebird for U3 and load it up with my email, contacts, newsgroups, and even my RSS feed subscriptions and have it all everywhere I go. The problem is that the drive is 1gb and my email archives bring the 1gb down to 500k alone and Active Sync will not sync with Thunderbird. This was almost a perfect marriage for me, but I can’t give up my mobile device syncing of contact and to do lists. Either way, this is still an emerging technology that I believe will be huge once people realize the power.

Stay tuned over the next couple weeks as I test drive a few of these devices. The 1st one I am testing now is the 1gb Verbatim Store ‘n’ Go U3 Smart Drive. So far, I have hit Chris Pirillo up on Yahoo Instant Messenger and Jason Dunn on MSN using the free U3 Trillian software, I have tested and configured Firefox, Set up Thunderbird and tested RSS and Newsgroups, and played Party Poker for U3.

I have been using the Best Buy Geeksquad thumb drive now for about 4 months, and I was originally skeptical about the U3 specs when I got it. But it was really cheap for the 512mb version, so I thought I'd give it a try.

I have been incredibly impressed. I love that the U3 specs will allow me to run applications COMPLETELY off of the microdrive and without leaving traces on the host computer! This includes AntiVirus (which comes standard WITH the Best Buy microdrive), Firefox Mozilla 1.5.0.x and a range of other applications too. I'm hoping to be able to load up Spybot on to my microdrive too, and I'll feel MUCH more comfortable with hauling this thing around.

Oh. The built in ThumbDrive Management Console, for lack of better description, is just very well done. To remove the drive, you have a MAX of two clicks, and U3 will take care of disconnecting the drive from Windows API layers (in the USB Management window) FOR you. You don't have to go do this any more. Not on THIS drive, anyway (nb: Unless the U3 app isn't loaded up, then you will.).

I agree that U3 is cool. You cannot argue with having your data and apps on one flash drive. I am currently porting our software to the u3 spec. I am about 3 weeks away from submitting PimZilla to the U3 reviewers.

Uggg, Nooo! i hate it... its the most annoying thing ever!!!

it mounts itself on a cd-rom drive (that it makes)
i just want a thumb drive >_> not some evil annyoing software thats built in, and cannot be removed
