Case of the Missing iPod Nano : Don’t give kids iPods!

I am not sure if you remember the bit I did about kids and iPods, but I wrote one, I promise. In this, I was wondering what everyone thought about giving kids uber phones and devices. The status the iPod gives kids is just sick and I was unsure about allowing my daughter this status at the cost of $200. Well, I caved and made Brittney a very happy young lady.

I got her a 1gb white iPod nano. I gave the directions to her that she was not to carry it to school and if she disobeyed, not to be dumb enough to pull it out in class. Well, I am sure you know where this is going…..

She did, and she was dumb enough to pull it out in class. The excuse was that one of the other kids in class took it out of her purse. The iPod was taken up and sent to the keeper of unauthorized items. A couple of weeks ago, she let me know this. Earlier this week, I contacted the school to find out what the process was for recovering this item. I contact the keeper of unauthorized items and was shocked to here that there was no record of it being picked up by a guardian, but it was not there anymore. This school lost my daughter’s iPod. We are in limbo while she checks with others with access to her hiding place. I was informed this morning that since it was an unauthorized item, that we are out of luck if it doesn’t show up. I politely said ok, but I was only polite knowing that if it does not turn up, I will push the issue to the School Board.

Moral of this story? Don’t give 12 year olds uber gadgets!

  • In defense of Brittney...
What is a portable player for than carrying it around with you? This kind of problem may happen with any of us, 12-y-o or not!
Kids are excelent to teach parents how to use gadgets! :) :) :)

Um, sorry, but you needed this to happen to figure out it was a bad idea?
