Taiwan-based handset vendor Dopod International on May 2 launched the High Tech Computer (HTC) StarTrek smartphone under its brand, the Dopod S300, in the Taiwan market, at a suggested retail price of NT$13,900 (US$437), the cheapest model ever marketed by the company. The company aims to ship about 100,000 unit of the S300, which sports a 1.3-megapixel camera, push e-mail, QR Code and a 2.2-inch 240×320 (QVGA) display, in the Asia-Pacific market in 2006, said company president Jack Tong.
In related news, Dopod has entered a cooperation agreement with China-based telecom operator China Mobile, and the two companies jointly launched a dual-brand smartphone for the China market in April, Tong said, as quoted by the Chinese-language Commercial Times today. The dual-branded smartphone is based on the Dopod 818 Pro and is being modified to meet China Mobile’s specifications, the paper noted.
