One of the uses for PDAs that I have grown fond of is using it to read books, or ebooks, to be more correct. Finding good books to read can help pass the time at work when I’m supposed to be working, or looking like I’m working. I like being able to carry hundreds of books on my device, so I can read whatever I want whenever I want. More and more mainstream books are being released in the standard ebook formats for Palm and Pocket PC based devices, but the price is a little spendy (for me anyway). Many publishers charge the same price for a new book no matter if it is paper or electronic. So I am always on the lookout for a cheap (read: FREE) books to read. MemoWare is just such a place.

This is a site that specializes in free ebooks on a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction subjects. Many are user contributed in a variety of formats. Not only do you have choice of Microsoft Reader .lit or Palm .pdb versions, there are TomeReader, iSilo, MobileDB, and Adobe .pdf version available as well. Not all books are available in all formats, but there is enough variety that anyone should be able to find something worth reading.

You have to join (it’s free) to download. One of the nice features is an eBook Primer on just what an ebook is, and explains all of the ins and outs of using them.  The primer can be helpful, especially to newbies. Most popular titles are listed, as well as who some of the major contributors to the site. If you want, they also have an eBookstore with over 18,000 titles for purchase. Now you can have something on that long commute besides just listening to that iPod.
