OK, I am not a total stranger to the "Smartphone". I have used several "Smartphones", but just have not gotten what I wanted from them. They were all really the same in functionality and lack of an input method I can use. I really liked the "regular" phone style of the Motorola MPx220, but I just couldnt get used to the T9 input. The same goes for the Audiovox SMT 5600 and the Cingular 2125 / Tmobile SDA. I just can’t use these as more than just a phone!

Enter the Motorola Q
After using the Q now for a while, I have some mixed feelings. The data input problem has been eliminated! The keyboard, while not the best out there, is an excellent replacement to the T9 input most "Smartphones" employ. I would love for it to have a touch screen, but hey, it wouldn’t be a "Smartphone" then!

What I like so far:

  • Size and Style. The size is amazing and it’s better than a cute baby in the mall if you want to turn heads.
  • Radio. The signals on this phone make pocketpc phones look like toy walkie talkie. It’s not the network, its the radio!
  • Windows Mobile. That’s all I can say!
  • Keyboard. OMG! It’s nice! I can pound out some mobile email and messenging now!
  • Verizon’s Wireless Sync Service

What I don’t Like so far:

  • Battery Life. I hit my devices hard all day and this one needs a mid day nap with my rigorous use. On the plus side, it charges REALLY fast.
  • No Touchscreen. I know. I know…. BUT, I still miss a touchscreen. I am getting used to it though.
  • Orientation of the Screen. The orientation renders some programs and games useless.
  • EV-DO. I don’t have it here. (*not a Moto Q problem, just being in the country)

So far, I am really liking this device. I personally think I could use it long term. I may not, but I could.

If you want a shot at winning a Motorola Q, here is a contest from Microsoft where a real person will actually win. ( Link )

There's plenty of shortcomings with the Treo, too.
Anyways, Chris, I couldn't wait around for you and your thumbs report (up or down), so I went and got one. Your consclusions are RIGHT ON. These things need a touch screen and then they'd be close to perfect. The phone is awesome--and everything else about it is a muscle-memory-wrestling-match. We'll figure it out and get used to it, but----my Kingdom for a stylus....
  • I like the looks of the Treo as well, but the Q is so thin and it's a "Smartphone", which is something many people are after for the 1 handedness (made up word..hehe)

I dont get it. The looks just dont do anything for me. I'm still trying to figure out why everyone was looking forward to this thing. Why would i want one of these over Treo?
