A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Congrats Julie! Ok, now that I have that off my chest, back to the business of the moment.

Julie over at the Gadgeteer.com has had a chance to check out the Sony Vaio VGN-UX50 that everyone is raving over. James Kendrick over at JKontheRun.com has one as well, but unless I missed it, he has no review up yet.

"With all that said, I still think the UX50 would make a great travel companion for someone that doesn’t want to lug a full-sized laptop with them on a trip. Using this device for picture offloading, websurfing and emailing would be perfect. Hardcore photoshop work, spreadsheet work, powerpoint presentation creations, etc, might present a problem. Unless you have bionic eyes or something ;o) I don’t want to be too hard on Sony, because they seem to be the one of the few companies that continue to push the envelope and bring innovative feature rich products to the market for us consumers to drool over. The price $1899.00 price tag may scare you away, but if you are in the market, this looks like a contender!

Pros:

  • XP machine in your palm
  • Built in keyboard
  • WiFi, Bluetooth radios
  • 2 cameras

Cons:

  • Flat keyboard
  • Short battery life
  • Screen may be too tiny for some people

  • I picked up a UX50 in Japan at Yodobashi camera two weeks ago, and love it. I'm getting a bit faster at the thumb typing, but never expect to be better than about 30wpm. The small screen still works for me since it's got great contrast. I have fairly good eyes and crave all the real estate. Better, and more compact than the other Origami 800x600 units out there.

Here's an unboxing / first impressions video from when I first got the machine:
