Salt Lake City based Parvus Corp unveiled its WL 1000 "wrist wearable wireless computer at Technet
International 2006, a major defense and electronics industry show, this week in Washington, D. C.
This device was made for use by military organizations only, at this time. "One of the core visions of our company refers to the idea of ‘pervasive computing,’ meaning computers are becoming so much a part of our lives that they have become an appendage to our lifestyle," said Mike Southworth, director of marketing for Parvus. It is expected to become available worldwide next month and will sell for $2500.
The computer has gps, wifi, bluetooth and is compatible with Linux and Windows CE. It will run for up to eight hours by using power-management technology.
"In the military there is a huge focus on linking every computing device on the field as part of a ‘battlefield network,’ and this device, because it integrates wireless technolgies, could be part of that network," Southworth said. "we also have future versions on our military product road map that are more ruggedized for use in the field."
Southworth also said this isn’t proprietary archictecture, meaning in the not too distant future we could be looking down at our wrists for more than the time!
