It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

Many cell phone carriers want you to think that you are limited to purchasing their brand of phones. But it is possible to buy a Cingular phone, and use it on T-mobile, and vice-versa. The phone needs to be "unlocked" and it is becoming a very popular thing to do with phones. PC Magazine has an excellent discussion on this subject, which was prompted by a letter to them. It’s good information, and well worth reading.

The PC mag article informative and somewhat interesting does references an unlocker utility on XDA-developer.

If your interested in that utility, save your time. Look at the first XDA page, it references two flavors (generic or hermes). Read each one of those branches first. It aparently does do a plethora of phones. The thread is very OLD. It stretches from 2003-2008. And mostly lazy "will it work with my crap?" comments. Around page 125 an HTC 8525 endorses it so todays cingular tilt falls in that catagory. It may be easier to just cruise into the ATT store and have it unlocked because you want it unlocked.
  • Thanks for the link. It was well worth reading. I look forward to your future work.

Now why doesn't it surprise me that Verizon is on that list of exceptions? Everyday, more and more reasons why Verizon is becoming known "on the street" as the Nickle-n'- Dime company....
