A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

HP Recall Imminent

HP’s newest lineup of desktop computers, featuring Media Center PCs with AMD Live! Technology, are hitting retail shelves now, but maybe not for long, at least as far as one model is concerned. The HP MediaCenter m7560n features an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ Processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB Harddrive, beefy specs even for customer builders, but a major oversight during image creation may very well be bringing every one of them back. That glorious 320GB SATA harddive is partitioned, as most HP’s are, in both a standard C: drive and an HP Restore Partition for restoring from system crashes and virus infections. This particular model, however, features just under 300GB of restore partition, all locked away from the user. This leaves about 20GB to use, much less after factoring in the Windows XP Install and slieu of programs HP preloads. Oops!  Hopefully this will be fixed via a software patch, but considering the nature of the problem and the relatively few programs that can successfully resize a partition while preserving data, I’m not so sure a recall isn’t the only viable solution.

Reporting back on above: Partition Magic worked like a charm. Fast and easy. You wind up without the recovery drive though so you need to get the recovery disks from HP.

We called HP customer service and they would not acknowledge the issue at first, but eventually (when we got bumped up a couple of levels) they caved and said "yeah, there's a problem with the manufacturing drive image on that model."

But ultimately they were kind of asses when they made it seem like it was such a huge favor they were doing us by shipping out recovery disks for free.

I was just troubleshooting the new m7560n in our office and indeed, I assure you, it *is* true.

There's a 280MB "restore drive" sealed off from the user, and an 18GB C: drive with all the system files and apps on it. Holy Guacamole.

Let's see if our copy of Norton Partition Magic can fix this. I hope so 'cause we already installed a new power supply and an ATI X1900 XTX card. I'll report back.

I called hp to ask if that was true and they said no.
