Dell has surreptitiously pulled the one time "ipod killer" from the shelves, according to Dell spokesman Venancio Figueroa on Wednesday, August 23.

He declined to specify reasons for the pullout, but merely inferred that Dell is focusing on its core products of PCs, printers and flat-panel televisions.

The Ditty, like the ipod Shuffle, cost $99 at introduction and included 512 mB of memory, but the Ditty compressed music and could hold 100 songs more. It also had an FM receiver and a 1 inch LCD, neither of which appeared on the Shuffle. But even at a reduced price, buyers stayed away.

Analyst Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies said, "it was never really a strategic product for them, it’s a smart move to cut their losses and run." Apple retains over 70% market share.

Wow. Some headlines just write themselves.
Too bad ipoo'd still commands such market share. Apple is going to have to start dropping prices on their players; flash media is crashing down in prices; you can get 4GB of SD for under $60, if you look for it.
Of course, your PDA or memory-upgradable media player doesn't have that "oh so stylish" ugly appliance white finish which so closely matches Apple's "1984" dystopian future style. Hmmmm.
