Dart Devices… A next big thing?

So you’ve got your new "Digital Lifestyle" set up.,. your set top box, your PC, couple of PDAs a smartphone or two, and a DVR for good measure.. The only problem is that the only thing that seems to talk to them all is that PC. Wouldn’t it be just dandy if they could talk to each other natively without having to mess around with protocols, drivers, profiles etc?Well that’s part of Motorola’s big new plan. They’ve just done a deal with DART Devices who think they have the technology to do it
"DART's solution, which helps facilitate interoperability for multipleapplications on disparate devices, aligns well with Motorola's vision ofseamless mobility," said Tony Palcheck, investment manager, MotorolaVentures. "Their software allows wired and wireless distribution ofapplications, games and information such as music, photos, video, calendarsand data, across mobile phones, PCs, Internet servers, PDAs, set-tops, MP3players and DVRs."
Now apart from the fact that he uses the words ‘Facilitate interoperability’ instead of ‘work’ this looks interesting. A brief hop over to the other half of the partnership Dart say
“DARTdevices’ cool technology provides a seamless way for diverse consumer entertainment devices, mobile gadgets and computers to interact, securely share and update information and applications. DART software provides peer-to-peer content access and distribution by effectively turning all devices into one virtual device. It is a product that has to be seen to be fully understood…”
Chris Shipley, executive producer of DEMO.
Its a shame then that the likes of you and me aren’t going to be able to see it yet, unless you happen to own a large electronics company DART are being very shy at the moment.
While Dart can run on an extremely wide range of digital devices, the initial devices we will support are Windows and Mac PCs, popular smartphones, Windows and Linux Internet servers and devices targeted as part of alliances with device vendors, wireless and wired carriers or other partners.
So it looks like it’s going to be either, a really snazzy set of technology, that we are all going to come to know and love, or another one of those ideas dies (Gizmondo anyone?)
