The town of Babylon in Long Island, NY, used GPS phones for its trucks, and this same technology
led police right to the suspects, just a 1/2 mile from the scene of the crime.
"A few drivers came and said, ‘The GPS isn’t in the truck," Berdolt said. "That’s when we realized they were stolen. We figured out which ones were taken, fire them up on the screen and three were active. The other ones, we did a bread-crumb trail report on."
Though the department hadn’t activated the phones for making calls, one of the theives had replaced the SIM card and was making calls.
Three people were arrested and charged with possession of stolen property and grand larceny.
