Mobile TV, a big turn off in the UK

In October a WM Smartphone (made by HTC) was launched on the unsuspecting public of the UK, with a multimillion pound advertising campaign. Virgin called the phone the Lobster 700tv However all the smartphone features were played down, and its unique selling point was the fact that it could see terrestrial TV channels (BBC1 free and the others for a monthly free), as opposed to the reduced services that the other networks were showing.
Rather than streaming the stations, the Lobster used some of the spare bandwith from the DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio network. Sounds good? well the response has been very disappointing.
Despite cutting the price of the handset from £199 to under £99 takeup has been er… embarrassing With ’significantly less than 10,000 ‘ subscribers. Virgin are planning a relaunch later this year with some ’sexy new’ handsets… but it doesn’t look good for the Virgin team.
