Due to the nature of mobility site, we do tend to be a bit windows mobile focused when it comes to mobile phones.
However (thankfully) wm is not the only OS in town when it comes to cellphones and the Symbian OS has been rather busy too.
So, Here’s some things that the Symbian gang have announced at 3GSM
- Firstly there seems to be a huge amount of them about…
51.7m Symbian smartphones shipped in 2006, two Symbian smartphones shipping per second108 Symbian smartphone models shipping in different markets and segments (an 80% increase on 2005). According to Canalys, in Q4 2006 4.5 million Symbian smartphones shipped at mid-range price points (<199€), an 86% share of the mid-range smartphone market. 110 million cumulative Symbian smartphone have shipped to date.

New MOTORIZR Z8 based on Symbian OS
Motorola launched the MOTORIZR Z8 – a smart and sexy HSDPA (3MB/sec) phone based on UIQ 3 and Symbian OS v9. The MOTORIZR Z8 is the fourth Symbian smartphone from Motorola.The world’s top five leading handset manufacturers have launched smartphones based on Symbian OS v9 using either S60 or UIQ.
- Five new Nokia S60 devices based on Symbian OS
The Nokia 6110 Navigator, Nokia N77 and three new Nokia Eseries devices are all based on Symbian OS.
- Deals have been signed with Telefónica Móviles España produce some smartphones, and Telecom Italia are doing the symbian thing to.
- Vodafone, Tmobile and Nokia have been making strong progress on the S60 front,
- OPENWAVE will be shipping their MIDAS and Mercury Browser to Symbian smartphones.
- DataViz’ RoadSync v3.0, now available
Dataviz announced the only S60 on Symbian OS Exchange ActiveSync solution to support subfolders and Exchange Server 2007 mobile enhancements, enabling the Nokia ESeries and NSeries devices to offer the latest Microsoft Office connectivity options.
- BLStream brings Blogia mobile blogging to Symbian smartphones
BLStream announced it has joined the Symbian Platinum Partner Program to support the growing market for Symbian smartphones. As a Platinum Partner, BLStream is extending its Blogia mobile blogging solution to the Symbian ecosystem, creating new revenue streams for service providers and mobile operators through distribution of mass media such as digital photos, video and sound captured by camera-equipped smartphones
BrainMedia extends music and video content distribution system to Symbian smartphones BrainMedia announced that it has joined the Symbian Platinum Partner Program to support the growing market for Symbian smartphones by extending its Digital Media Delivery Platform and its Neural Encoding Model (NEM) Codec to the Symbian ecosystem.
- Boingo demonstrates Wi-Fi roaming solution for Symbian smartphones
Boingo Wireless Inc., announced it has joined the Symbian Platinum Partner Program. The Boingo Embedded Wi-Fi Toolkit enables Wi-Fi and dual-mode smartphones to easily and transparently authenticate to Boingo’s Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide.
