According to the Royal Navy…
HMS Dauntless is fitted with a potent new air defence system able to track and destroy salvos of advanced supersonic missiles, keeping the fleet safe from air attack. Her air defence system is so advanced it can hit a target the size of a cricket ball travelling three times the speed of sound. For the crew life has added comforts, including i-pod charging points, computer access, 5-Channel recreational audio, and larger berths.
Oh yes, and it is powered by Windows for Warships, which is Based on Windows 2000. And its not the only one. The V-Class submarines in the UK fleet is being retrofitted with the same command system. For those not familiar with British submarine system they are the ones that carry the UK’s Nuclear Arsenal of Trident ICBMs.
The decision to go with Win2k was seriously questioned by many analysts and Navy experts. Former Navy man and now Technology writer, Lewis Page has written an excellent piece over at the register, explaining the issues, and why windows may be trouble.
