Microsoft will be announcing Windows Mobile 6 at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona next week. The info you got last week is true, the naming scheme is different. This is the way it will lay out.

  • Windows Mobile 5.0 = Windows Mobile 6
  • Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone  = Windows Mobile 6 Standard
  • Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC Phone Edition = Windows Mobile 6 Professional
  • Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC  = Windows Mobile 6 Classic

I am not too excited about these changes, but the future is moving towards convergence and I am sure this will help in the future. We will hold up posting any of the quotes from Microsoft about this naming change until it’s announced officially next week.
