Just so I don’t end up starting a mass panic, It’s not the end of the world either. While I was surfing the net I came across this article in IT PRO about how IT departments need to be wary about Bluetooth related issues.
If you leave Bluetooth devices in discoverable mode, then you may well find yourself being spied on
It’s a trap that security professionals can fall into themselves, never mind ordinary civilians. In June of this year, anti-virus company Kaspersky Lab did research in London over three days, finding in the process 2,000 Bluetooth-enabled devices in ‘visible to all’ mode, the setting a hacker needs to attack the device. Around half of these unsecured devices were discovered at InfoSecurity 2006, an event you’d expect to be attended by some of the most security conscious people in the country.
And apart from hacking you’re leaving yourself open to possible Virus attacks and Bluesnarfing..
So the golden rules are
Don’t accept every file you are being send, just click ‘no’
Disable Bluetooth if not required
Pair in ’secure’ places
Hold your Bluetooth vendor accountable for vulnerabilities
