This isn’t anything to do with the iPhone.. no honestly it isn’t.. please don’t stop reading….
Ok,., if there’s anyone still reading this I thought I’d talk about iPlayer.. The new launch from the BBC which will let all of its viewers catch up on television that they’ve missed from the last 7 days. Initially it’s going to be rolled out on Windows PCs which has caused some complaints from people who would prefer it to be on a technology neutral platform. And the bad news is that it’s unlikely to work on windows mobile devices either..
Still on the plus side, Apple (drat, I wasn’t supposed to mention those) users, and Virgin media customers should be able to get it in a couple of months, and then freeview people will be allowed to join the party by the end of the year.
FAQ: What and when
What do I need?
To download iPlayer software you need a PC with Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6.0 or later and a broadband connection of 512kbps or above.
What can I watch?
A choice of 400 hours of programs from the previous seven days.
Why only the last seven days?
The BBC argues it needs to protect its partners and its own rights, in order to make money from DVD sales and paid-for downloads.
When does it launch?
The full “open beta” launch will be on July 27.
Unlike most broadcasters, the BBC doesn’t make it’s money from advertising, instead most of its revenue comes from a License Fee that every household has to pay if they own one or more televisions. In order to justify this, the BBC needs to keep a large market share.. and hence prove that it is providing a universal service for all… And if it means that I will never miss an episode of Dr Who again, then I’ll be a happy bunny
