The Blackberry has long since overtaken the pager as the civil servant’s messenger of choice. But now there is a problem. Well at least there is in France where Officials in the Prime Ministers and Presidents offices  have been banned from using the devices over security concerns.

The problems come from the fact that although the devices give instant access to email and other information, the data itself is stored on servers hosted on  British and American servers.

The Ban may not be 100% effective as according to the Le Monde Newspaper.

Some officials are flouting the ban and using them in secret.

“They tried to offer us something else to replace our Blackberries but it doesn’t work,” one unnamed official told the paper.

Rim, Makers of the Blackberry said that..

The US National Security Agency did not have the ability to view the content of any data communication sent through Blackberry servers.

“RIM continues to be committed to working with and supporting the needs of both corporate and government customers within France, including protecting data from attack and unauthorised access,” it added.
