My iPhone Thoughts
This post was published 2 years 5 months 5 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.Ok, the iPhone has generated the biggest buzz in the gadget world EVER. I don’t care if you love or hate the
Apple scene, you have seen more than you may want to have seen about the iPhone. I will make no bones about the fact that I have never been a fan of the Apple Scene, I won’t dance around it. I won’t love it today, hate it tommorow like some. I just prefer, for better or worse, Microsoft products. I have supported every music player that is not an iPod and I will continue to do so. Do I think the iPod sucks? Nope. It’s a great device, I have 3 of them in my house. One is rotting in my device museum, my wife uses one, and the other is lost somewhere. (at least that’s what I told my daughter) I have a couple Zunes, I have a couple Sansa players, a Zen, and several Dell DJs.
Now that the mood is set and my loyalties laid out, let’s talk about the iPhone. It looks like it’s going to be a super device. I am excited to see how it lives up in the real life enviorment. We have a release date now of June 29th and now some new info in from 9to5mac via Boy Genius Report.
After watching the commercials online ( Link ), I am becoming more and more impressed. This looks like it’s going to be a successful ad campaign. Simple, shows and highlights key features, etc. I like what I see visually so far. I have not touched this phone yet, but here are my concerns.
Lack of 3rd Party Application Support. This is big for me and I am sure lots of other gadget freaks. One thing I have noticed in my time running Aximsite and Mobilitysite is that people LOVE TO CUSTOMIZE. Changing the look of your today screen, adding your own icons, etc. That’s just visuals. What about the addons. What would you do if Windows Mobile didn’t allow you to install PDA Mill or Astraware games and you were stuck on the plane with only Bubble Breaker and Solitaire? I understand that Steve said they may allow 3rd party apps in the future. I hope he’s right. It would be a shame Apple didn’t allow this.
Battery Life. With that huge screen and all those cool sensors and such that make the almost buttonless device tick, how is battery life going to hold up. From all of what I have read, the battery is not replacable. Will this thing last through the day? I hope so.
Here is what Boy Genius Report is saying about the known features:
- The iPhone will interact with your Mac through iPhoto and iTunes, but will not appear on your desktop as a removable drive.
- There will not be an external SIM slot, contrary to the announcement at MacWorld stating that the phone would have a SIM slot at the top of the device.
- The battery will be next to impossible to remove, as there are no external latches, release buttons, or clips (but you already knew that, didn’t you?).
- An iChat program will not be included in the initial operating system. Coupled with the lack of support for 3rd party apps for the time being, this means that there will be no way to get your instant messaging fix for now.
- Safari for iPhone features tabbed browsing, making it an even more appealing alternative to the Pocket IE world.
- There is a VPN client currently in beta that may or may not be included in the initial release.
- The screen is surprisingly resistant to smudges and blemishes.
Time will tell my friends. Time will tell. Either way the iPhone pans out, it has been the most hyped phone EVER. I plan on getting one for evaluation as soon as I can.
