New iPhone Mobile Speed Test

DSL Reports has a new speed test online made just for the iPhone. I performed this test on my iPhone and got a report of 152kbps, which is inline with other tests i’ve run. In addition, my laptop wireless card’s EDGE speed test came in at 159kbps in the same area of town.

This 152kbps is also inline with other tests done by the same test. According to my results, phones on AT&T EDGE using this test page are averaging 148kbps over 27 samples.

The EDGE network is slow as Christmas, but who do we blame? Certainly not AT&T, they didn’t choose to equip the iPhone with EDGE, right? Or is it AT&T for not having blanket 3G coverage in the US already? My guess is that Apple chose EDGE to conserve battery life.

Anyhow, it’s doesn’t really matter why, all we need to know is that EDGE “is” sufficient to do some things on the iPhone, but Google Maps at 150k is not very pleasurable.
