liverbird Liverpool City Council is about to give the go ahead for a wireless city center network, powered by British Telecom. 30 sites have been identified where the access points will be attached to lampposts, including Seel Street, Brunswick Street, Lime Street, Tithebarn Street, Canada Boulevard, Chapel Street, London Road, Hardman Street and The Strand.

According to the report in the Echo

Residents, businesses and visitors would have to pay a fee to use wi-fi, while the council could use it for a whole host of services, including bus lane enforcement.

A council report says: “Across the UK, many cafes, libraries, shops, stations, airports and restaurants have been installing wi-fi access points so customers can surf the web as they eat, browse or wait.

“BT’s proposal is to increase wi-fi access across the city, improving provision across a much wider area.”
