imagePut on your dancing shoes and grab a wireless handset. AT&T announced today the company is teaming with ABC Television network’s hit program “Dancing With the Stars” to offer viewers — for the first time — a chance to vote for their favorite couple via text messaging.

The new voting method, available only to AT&T wireless customers, will supplement the current online (http://abc.com) and toll-free call-in voting methods. In addition, after each telecast of “Dancing With the Stars – The Results,” AT&T customers will have access to exclusive, unaired video footage from the program on their 3G wireless handsets. AT&T’s Video Share service will also be integrated into an episode of the show. Video Share is the first service in the country that allows users to share live video over their wireless devices while participating in a voice call.

“Participation in TV programs through text messaging has been enormously successful because it invites fans to be a part of the action in a meaningful way,” said Mark Collins, vice president of Consumer Data for AT&T’s wireless unit. “AT&T is excited to provide ‘Dancing With the Stars’ fans a chance to show support for their favorite couples through the ease and convenience of text messaging. In addition, our 3G customers can enjoy exclusive, mobile video content of the show that has not been aired on TV.”

The fifth edition of “Dancing With the Stars” kicks off Monday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC as 12 celebrities attempt to outshine one another. This season marks the largest and most diverse cast assembled to date, which includes an Emmy-winning actress, a Vegas icon, an Indy 500 champion, a Spice Girl, a daytime drama star, a Cheetah Girl and a former resident of “90210.”

Text Voting Is As Easy As 1, 2, 3!

Fans of the show need to follow three simple steps to vote:

  1. On an AT&T wireless phone, select Menu, and start a new message from the Text Messaging option.
  2. Type in the word VOTE and then select Options and Send.
  3. Enter the four-digit number of the couple of choice, then select OK. (Numbers for each couple are listed during each voting show.)

AT&T offers a range of messaging packages, starting at $4.99 a month for 200 messages. AT&T also offers an unlimited messaging package that allows customers to send texts to anyone, anywhere in the U.S. for one low monthly cost. Messaging packages include text, picture, video and instant messaging. Customers can upgrade at any time without having to extend their voice contracts.

Most AT&T wireless phones support text messaging. Visit AT&T -Text Messaging or dial 611 from a wireless AT&T phone to find out whether a current handset is text-messaging compatible.
