And the winner is… Zune!

It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

The combination of the price cut and the news about Microsoft supporting the old 30 GB Zune with the new software version has resulted in Zune becoming the best seller HDD based mp3 player in amazon.

An interesting phenomenon is taking place… as a result of the Zune team’s announcement this week, sales of the Zune 30GB player are rising sharply, according to Amazon’s list of best-selling hard drive players list.

The white Zune is currently the #1 hard drive player on Amazon, the black Zune 30 is #3, and brown Zune 30 is #5. I don’t recall Zune ever dominating that list to that degree.

Evidently the lowered prices combined with the prospect of November’s firmware upgrade, are spurring sales.

Bigger Screen, WiFi synchronization, integrated FM Tuner, “the Social” and a renovated software are key in this success.

Oh boy, now you done it.

Yes, for some reason Amazon does not categorize any current-gen hard drive players, including the new iPod Classics, in the hard drive category. Looking at the more broad "MP3 players" category, there are a few interesting consequences:

    - Every iPod classic is ranked much higher than the highest Zune 30.
    - If you restrict the category to "hard drive-based MP3 players released LAST year" then only one previous-gen iPod is outselling the Zune 30s. This is kind of fair because those iPods are the ones the Zune 30s were intended to compete with, but at the same time it isn't fair at all because those iPods would be selling much faster if they were still the newest iPods.
    - Pre-orders for the Zune 80 are actually significantly higher than Zune 30 orders, although still behind about a dozen iPod products.
    - In addition to the new classics and the black previous-gen iPod, there are 4 current-gen Nanos, a previous-gen Nano, and a current-gen Shuffle ranked ahead of the Zune 30s, along with the $300-$400 iPod Touch.

So basically, while the increased interest is a great sign for MS, there still is no comparison between any Zune and the bulk of the updated iPod lineup.

An honest mistake, but lord, the Apple die-hards won't show any mercy, and something tells me that an army of them is about to show up.

Huh. But in the overall MP3 player rankings the highest ranking Zune I see on Amazon is the 30GB White and it's only #17. Additionally, the number one MP3 player is an older 4th generation iPod, which is also HD based but doesn't appear on the HD chart. Also the Apple "clasic: HD players are higher than the Zune in the MP3 player chart but don't appear in the HD chart at all.

Those inconsistencies kind of make me question the validity of their rankings and I would take them all with a grain of salt.
