How To Beat The "Bloat" On Your AT&T Tilt!

closeThis post was published 2 years 28 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.

nobloat Is your AT&T Tilt feeling a little heavy? Does your device seem to have that sluggish, “I can’t get started in the morning” feeling about it? Well, fear not! You won’t need to figure out how to force coffee through your mini-USB cable to perk up your Tilt! Our good friends at XDA-Developers (dot com) have figured out the trick to loose that unwanted “Bloatware” that AT&T so ridiculously loads on our precious devices!  And it is very easy to perform! Here is what you will need to do:

1) Back up your Tilt using the included Spite Back Up software included!

2) Hard reset your device (It’s worth it trust me!). Now there are two ways to accomplish this. The easiest way is the Clear Storage application under Settings/System/Clear Storage, or you can hold the two soft key buttons and simultaneously soft reset. I never get this to work however. Just use the Clear Storage and save yourself a lot of embarrassment from your uncoordinated fingers! (LOL)

3) When your Tilt reboots it will take you through the normal screen alignment process and then setting your time zone, and finally the cut and paste routine. When it brings up the home screen there will be a pop-up that prompts enhancements will begin in three seconds, QUICKLY SOFT RESET WHILE THIS IS DISPLAYED! Your device will soft reset  and then bring up the today screen and avoid loading all the Bloatware! Hooray! No more Bloatware!

Now load all your favorite applications and resume your life feeling much more slimmed down with the knowledge that your Beat the Bloat laid on you from our good friends at AT&T!

Enjoy my fellow Tilt Friends!

For windows mobile 6 you need to do the soft reset as soon as you see the today screen. Then it worked for me.

This routine does not work for me with Windows Mobile 6.1 installed. Suggestions?
  • Craig
    yes, you will lose it.

I have alot of apps already on my tilt. If I do the reset that clears all the blot will it clear all my apps that i want on there?
  • Craig
Thanks! I got it to work too. One thing that bothered me with the bloat-load was that I could not customize the start manu to add communications manager. Without the bloat, it is a setting that can be added.

Without the bloat, communication manager is also on the Today screen by default, and the 7 picture icons that used to appear at the top of the today screen now show up at bottom. I missed having them!

NEVERMIND I GOT IT!! ive tried this like 10 times and it didnt work when the box popped up that counts down from 3 seconds to 0. you have to do it before that box pops up as soon as it says setup is complete you tap the screen and you see your main screen soft reset your device and the bloat is gone :-)

windows 6.1 doesnt seem to let you get rid of it. Is there a way around it?

I can't get rid of the bload with 6.1 like the prior person. Can anyone else ?

I've tried atleast ten differnt times to get rid of the bloatware but it's not working. What am I doing wrong?

Will this process work on the new ATT 6.1 that comes out tomorrow (hopefully)?

I plan to ActiveSync before flashing the new ROM and then re-add the CABs i want.

Will the new ROM even have all of this bloatware or will it be gone on this new one.

And I've found the more you have on the TILT, the slower it gets. If I can get rid of 17MB and leave that space free, thats a noticeable amount of speed based on something I never wanted to begin with.

Are we sure about this process not messing anything up?

For me, it's not really the physical size as much as the principle. For example: if I decide I don't want to buy Tiger Woods PGA Tour or TeleNav to have on my phone, I should be able to get rid of it without having a permanent ad for it stuck on my file manager. It's not the fact that it's bloatware that ticked me off; it's the UNREMOVABLE bloatware that isn't right.

I followed the instructions and now my mobile 6 is different. It will not open zip files like the one for the 6 tab htc homeplug. My GF has the same tilt. We got them exactly at the same time. Her Mobile 6 seems to be the same as what mine was before I got rid of the bloat. Can you tell me what the difference is?

To PeeVee: about your question of connectivity, I did just that, and it's working just fine. As an added plus I can dump the att connect software on my laptop (if I wanted this sort of stuff taking up space, I would have stayed with VZ) because the internet sharing option is on the device when you abort the bloatware.

Connecting clean and fast. No problems yet, but I'll post if I discover any. I'll be playing around all weekend making sure everything is OK on the scrubbed device. The gain of 17megs seems like it's all upside right now. 17megs. Remember when palm had a whopping 512K?

Pronto, you're right in that it does only clear up storage memory, it largely is popular for ridding all of the at&t; links that most don't like.

PeeVee I only suggest a backup because you may want to put the "Bloat" back on. The cabs are available to load seperately if you like, but backing up before you do anything is always a good idea regardless.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Please feel free to submit content, tips, or tricks that would help out our readers.

If I follow your process, why am I backing up the device first. Wouldn't restoring the backup re-add the bloatware. If I just removed the bloat without restoring from backup, would I have any problems with connectivity wity AT&T's MediaNet or any other PDA functions?

Honestly... there isnt alot of BLOT. Sure the mess with the icons and create a bunch of folders, but most of those icons are weblinks ... not apps taking up space. If you remove the sample music (9megs), and that Xpress Mail app there is much of anything else that is sapping your storage or processor.

On top of that what was the point of using sprite backup to backup your device if you don't even mention using it to selectively restore anything?

I had a test unit at work and I looked at the Memory under both conditions. The only gain is storage space, and there is plenty of that.

    Stock AT&T: RAM=74.67, Storage= 97.30
SoftRest before the cus: RAM 75.06, Storage=114.91
