Economy? No Problem. Stores are Jammed for Holidays!

As I said in a previous post, my wife was smart enough to shop well ahead of the Holiday Season. But most people have chosen Black Friday to begin their shopping. Black Friday, of course, is the first Friday after Thanksgiving, and is the biggest shopping day in the US.
Stores have been offering outrageous deals to get customers in the door. But the deals are misleading, as they often have severely limited stock of the bargain item. But since the stores are so jammed, customers end up “upgrading” their purchase and spending tons more. Unless they want to sleep on the sidewalk overnight. Here in the Chicago area the temp dipped into the 20’s. Ouch.
Some products, like the Zune 80 and Nintendo Wii, were nearly sold out. The economy is a bit on the downside, so people are trying to be frugal and find great deals. Easier said than done. My wife went out to get milk at Target and ran into a group of her friends. She asked them if they got any great deals. All of them had been out since 3AM shopping, and reported that the deals were not that great. Had they started out a few hours earlier…
Tech products led the way:
“Overall, the biggest draws were consumer electronics, including flat-screen TVs, digital cameras, digital frames, and laptops. In toys, which have been battered by recalls of a slew of lead tainted Chinese toys, there were plenty of hits, including video games such as Activision Inc.’s “Guitar Hero III,” toys related to Walt Disney Co.’s “Hannah Montana” and Smart Cycle from Mattel Inc.’s Fisher-Price, toy executives said.” from Yahoo!
Melissa O’Brien, spokeswoman at Wal-Mart, which offered such specials as a Polaroid 42-inch LCD HDTV for $798 and a $79.87 Sony digital camera, only said “we are excited about today.” Among the most popular items were flat-panel TVs, and various toys, particularly from the “Transformers” line. Special offers on GPS units and digital frames were selling “very fast,” she said. also from Yahoo!
