usb2009 When USB plugs first debuted in 1995 they ushered in an era of easy to use, fast connections, and happily helped to dethrone the unwieldy, large, serial and parallel cables of the 80’s.  Soon, we discovered we could daisy chain USB peripherals and add substantially more gadgets to our computers.  USB also helped in terms of portability.

USB 2.0 increased transfer speeds significantly from 187kB/s (1.5Mbits/s) to 480 Mbit/s (60MB/s).  Transferring music and mass amounts of data sped up significantly.

USB 3.0 aims to blow the previous standard away.  It will transfer data at a Super-Speed rate of 4.8Gbit/s (600MB/s), which is 10x faster than USB 2.0.  It will be backward compatible, promises better power efficiency and may better charge devices.

Imagine transferring 10 GB of music to a portable player only taking 2 1/2 minutes instead of 25 minutes.  That is appetizing!
