I guess low prices work. It’s working for HD-DVD and it looks like it’s working for Microsoft with the bargain priced Zune 30s now.

A Zune media player is the top-selling digital musical device on Amazon.com, outselling Apple. Inc.’s iPod for the No. 1 ranking.

On Monday morning, Microsoft Corp.’s heavily discounted, 30-gigabyte, $134 Zune digital media player was ranked the No. 1 bestseller in the Seattle online retailer’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) list of top-selling MP3 players in the “Electronics” category.

Apple’s four-gigabyte iPod nano was No. 2, followed by Apple’s 80-gigabyte iPod “classic” at No. 3.

Last week, the Redmond computer giant (NASDAQ: MSFT) introduced a new 80-gigabyte Zune player, but they’re hard to find. Amazon’s site on Monday said they’re “temporarily out of stock” and no future shipping date was listed. Microsoft’s own Zune site said the 80-gigabyte player can’t be ordered until “early December.”

Now thats Music to my Ear’s. I like to hear that someplace Microsoft is outselling Ipods. You really cant beat that deal though. I really wanna go get one for myself but I want to wait for the Zune 80 Originals to come out. I just don’t wanna spend the money that I don’t have and then go get another one so I will have to pass these great deals. I wonder where they will be taking over next. How about the whole US Market? lol That would be the day. I really dis-like Apples ipods. I am just glad to hear Microsoft finally getting somewhere.

I’d say that Apple sold an iPod 30 gig for the same price then it would beat the pants off the Zune.

Microsoft wants the Zune to be a premium product. The fact that it succeeds as a discount brand is not good news at all. It’s been said many times that Apple makes little money on content sales but tons of profit on iPod hardware – the songs are the razors to the iPods blades (sort of a reverse analogy, I guess). If Microsoft makes no profit on Zune hardware that is not that good a thing at all. It just suggests to people that it you might be rewarded with a lower price if you just wait.

Every now and then you can find one for $89 on woot.com. You have to be early as they run out pretty fast. From what I understand they are refurbished, but have full warranty and stuff.

PS: I have no affiliation with woot and haven’t bought anything from them. Just passing on the information to the community.

Wow! Way to go Zune. It deserves to be no. 1. I hope it stays NO. 1 for a long time. Price is always the barrier.

  • Noble

Wow. I hope they get the shortage worked out quickly. Those Zunes will be need for Christmas.

I am actually a bit disappointed that none of the new Zunes make on that list. I am expecting the new zunes to completely rock and take atleast 15% of Apple market share. I think the word has not spread out enough that people are flocking to stores / webstores to buy the new zunes. The worst thing for Microsoft is not having the Zune 80s in store by Dec 1.

I wonder what it will be like when the Zune80 is no longer in short supplies. That will be interesting to see if the Zune80 outsells the iPod Classic!

Yes. Thats it zune kick there tail. Keep climbing to the top of the list

Yay! Yes, I’d agree low prices work. Haha. I mean many can’t afford to go and buy a really expensive media player. I’ve been using my Verizon Vcast phone for a year or so now, since I had to switch cell’s anyways. Glad to see Zune on top!

I think we all will be suprised with the sales from the holiday season. I predict that the Zune will probably be number in the MP3 market. The Sansa View has a lot of issues and so Microsoft might be able to take the NO. 2 spot from them.
