Company Recycles, Refurbishes and Reuses Phones to Help Save Lives and Mother Earth

image Are you one of the thousands of people who received a cool, new phone or PDA this holiday season? Wondering what to do with your old one? Recycle it by dropping it off at a Verizon Wireless Communications Store and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner. And the best part? All phones collected will be recycled or sold through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine Phone Recycling Program and either phones or cash will be donated to help survivors of domestic violence, helping to save lives and Mother Earth.

“It’s amazing how a small gesture like recycling an old phone can have
a huge impact. Over the past 10 years, our HopeLine program has kept tons of electronics waste and batteries out of landfills,” said Charles Hand,
president of Verizon Wireless’ New York Metro Region. “Equally important is
the fact that HopeLine has provided wireless phones that serve as lifelines
to domestic violence victims.”

To date, thanks to conscientious consumers, the HopeLine program has:

  • Kept more than 200 tons of electronics waste and batteries out of landfills.
  • Collected nearly 4.2 million wireless phones.
  • Properly disposed of nearly 1 million wireless phones.
  • Recycled more than 170,000 pounds of batteries in cooperation with Call2Recycle.

A recognized corporate leader for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue, Verizon Wireless was the first wireless carrier in the nation to collect and recycle old cell phones to benefit survivors and has done so since January 1999. Nationally, the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program has given more than $4 million in cash grants and more than 45,000 phones with airtime to domestic violence prevention organizations.

Wireless phones and accessories from any carrier can be donated at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store throughout New York and Northern New Jersey.
