A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Use Your 3G Tilt/TyTN II Device As A WiFi Router

wmwifirouter_2 I was reading on jkOnTheRun (Great Blog) and they have a great post on using you Windows Mobile 3G device as a WiFi Router! I initially asked myself where this would be useful, and in fact it would be very useful for me as a backup for running my business! Our warehouse has 4 computers running and consistently loses power during bad weather. Since we all run laptops and not PC’s, we could continue to run off of battery power (we have an APC too) and still all connect to the Internet! Pretty cool! I could answer emails, my customer service person could continue to process UPS parcels and take email orders, etc, etc, etc…

The program to do this is freeware (donations are accepted) and called WMWifiRouter. jk sums it up nicely by saying: “Of course, the more you share your one signal over WiFi with other clients, the slower all of you will be since the wireless pipe is only so big, but this could be useful in a pinch. (As in: CES!)”

“Obviously, you’ll want a truly unlimited data plan and I wouldn’t recommend doing this on a daily basis or you carrier might be peeved. Checking your terms of service is another good idea, but I’m not sure if any of the carriers address this particular usage. If you want to follow the full life-cycle of the application, there’s a dedicated thread over at XDA Developers.”

I hear this works with att Tilt phone but I also hear that phone has major design flaws. Does att have another phone this would work with?
  • Excellent review. I'll have to trial this software myself.

Note that although the software is freeware, this is only for personal use. Using it for your business (commercial use) does require a donation.

Excellent blog, and good review :)
