What a waste. The screen is way too small to use while driving. It would be ok for GPS while you are walking, but other than that, it would be a waste of money.

The Tilt has a GPS receiver (the hardware) built-in. You still need the maps provided by software. You can use Google Maps and/or Microsoft Live Search software for free to take the GPS information and pinpoint your location on a maps they provide. The GPS plan offered by AT&T downloads the map that displays your current location, so you do not need any additional software. If you just purchase the phone and its $9.99 per month navigation plan, you will have a workable GPS system – however it will be using data time a lot, so make sure you purchase a data plan to go with it.

Hello all. I have not yet received my Tilt but have a few questions. Please be gentle since I don’t really know much about this device yet. Why would I need a GPS software? Doesn’t it come with it? If I purchase the GPS plan, how does it work without software? I’m confused. What do I get if I just purchase the phone and it’s $9.99 navigation plan? Thanks.

Hey, all. I downloaded and install a product from Efficasoft called GPS Utilities which fires up your GPS receiver. It is $17.95. You can do a lot with it including upload maps and all. But the nice thing about it is that you can then download Google Maps, fire it up and then have it use the GPS. So for $18 I have a fully functional GPS system. Just started using it but if you are looking for something to try out before buying, this may be the way to go. And you can download the GPS Utilities for a trial before purchasing it as well.

Nope. The software is locked to the storage card you purchased. That was my gripe about it. I need at least 2GB for applications and media. And at the time, the only gps software available came on a 2GB card. GPS software is usually 1.5 – 1.8GB in size which includes all of the maps. Of course you can delete uneeded state maps to free up room, but that is not what I want to do.

BuyGpsNow is good stuff. I bought my iGuidance software and Holux 240 bluetooth GPS receiver from them for my Seimens SX66 … worked fine till I lost my SX66 … got my Tilt and installed the iGuidance software on it, used internal GPS receiver so now I don’t need my Holux receiver. (Except for maybe with my laptop as backup GPS option.)

Go with GPS software insted of TeleNav GPS … will pay for itself after 10 months relative to TelaNav.

The folks over at buyGPSnow have been helpful to me, also. They helped me select a great software/bluetooth combo back when I was using my Axim.

Now I’m using iGuidance 4 with my Tilt and it works great.
