The current Palm OS, version 5, was released six years ago.  Since then the sale of Palm devices has taken a nosedive.  Once the market leader, Palm’s market share is now to small to count.

Palm OS 6 was scheduled to be released awhile back, but didn’t make it out to market.  This had a negative effect on Palm’s potential partners and developers, who spent countless hours developing apps and hardware for the new OS.  These people have since moved on to developing for other products.

So will a new Palm OS change their dwindling fortunes, or will it be too little too late?  Windows Mobile has improved vastly since 2002, RIM’s Blackberry is an unqualified success, and Apple’s iPhone has dramatically changed the market.  So where will Palm fit in?  I hope they aim real high with their latest offering.

The new Palm OS, codenamed Nova, is due to be distributed to developers sometime this year.
