Say it’s not so….

I’ve seen a couple of articles today feeding a rumor that Motorola is considering leaving the cell business. Frankly, I hope it is not so and I hope that Motorola can spark a slow steady growth to restore its business in this market to gaining a profit. There is no question that weak sales over the past quarter are a strong indicator that they are in serious trouble but I can’t for the life of me understand why a company like Motorola can’t use its resources to reorganize and revitalize their cell phone division.
I still remember my first cell phone, a Motorola StarTac that I got in 1996. It was the smallest cell phone available and was a huge success. Motorola has had a slew of great devices like the Razor and recent devices like the Motorola Q, Motorola i930, and the Motorola HC700. I particularly liked the Z8 series and had hoped that it would finally arrive in a Windows Mobile version but that was not to be. A poor decision in my opinion because of the great form factor. It would have made an ideal Windows Mobile smartphone and probably would have solidified my migration to the smartphone form factor.
Electronista stated in their article today that a Nomura researcher did not indicate how quickly he would expect Motorola to phase out its cellphone offerings or whether this would extend to add-ons, which also include peripherals such as Bluetooth headsets and speakerphones but if it were to happen the remaining divisions would focus on government and large-scale business sales. Notably, Motorola would still appear in the mainstream market through its technologies, which include WiMAX handheld chipsets and mobile TV devices.
Note to Motorola: Don’t quit but rather regroup and realign your priorities to revamp and revitalize a market that you know and have understood for years. So, there was a lull in your priorities, get over it. Get back on track and deliver on the Motorola promise. Remove that smugness that has been growing and ultimately led to you being beaten at the game you started. Don’t forget you were the first company to innovate and introduce a truly mobile solution. Remember your company slogan: Intelligence Everywhere. Show it, use it and deliver on it.
A reemergence as a leader will not be an instantaneous happening but with the slew of new devices that you have appearing under the ‘Moto’ name, a slow, steady and strong growth can be expected to bring you back in the game as long as you consider the audience and adapt. Design great devices and have them fit the needs of a multitude of users. Can you imagine the possibilities of marketing a device like the the Z8 if a user could have purchased it with a choice of either the Symbian platform or Windows Mobile? I can and I’ll bet your founder, Paul Galvin, could have too!
