A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

RSS is a fantastic way to read information from various sources around the Internet. If your unfamiliar with RSS a good description can be found here at Wikipedia. The general idea is that sites publish an xml file periodically that allows remote clients to cache the data for faster/easier reading. There are a few pieces of software that will let you read these on windows mobile devices. The two that I have tried are PocketRSS and Egress. These can both be used as general rss readers. The beauty of them in my mind though is being able to embed rss data into the today screen. I have two feeds cycling on my today screen right now, my local recent sports scores and a local weather report. Animated screenshots of my today screen are below, Egress on the left PocketRSS on the right.

The two services I used for setting up those rss feeds are rssWeather.com for the local weather feed, and Totally Scored for the sports scores. Both are pretty self explanatory and result in a url which you can paste into PocketRSS or Egress as an rss feed. From within each application you can tailor update frequency and other behaviors for how often they cycle between items and which items show up on the today screen.

what about other types of rss feeds such as audio and pictures. how do these programs handle these?

Jeff, KaiserTweaks DRAMATICALLY reduces battery drain. IT makes pregrams that routinely access the internet much more liveable with the crappy 1350 mAh battery HTC rewarded us with!

I am curious from your experience of having a RSS feed on your Today screen, how much faster does your battery drain? I love the idea, but am concerned about power consumption. Thanks for the insight.
  • Good post. I'm eager to get my tilt. I'm waiting on work to decide if they are going to pay for my device or not before I make a decision. I can't wait to get something new though.
