I love reading about how products get developed.  For example, one of my favorite books is Fire in The Valley, a book that chronicles the personal computer’s modest beginnings to the current speed demons.  It’s must reading.

Another great story, written in Wired Magazine, courtesy of Pocket PC Thoughts, highlights the Untold Story behind the iPhone.  It is great reading.  It tells how Apple turned the cellular phone model upside down and gained control of the hardware aspects of the phone, rather than letting the cellular company dictate what they wanted.  But the iPhone was not Apple’s first foray into cell phones.

The story also hints at future technology.  The engineers were working on a touch surface for a tablet device and subsequently used that technology on the iPhone:

“Jobs had reason to be confident. Apple’s hardware engineers had spent about a year working on touchscreen technology for a tablet PC and had convinced him that they could build a similar interface for a phone.”
