A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Q9m I saw this tip on changing the device Name on Windows Mobile 6 device over at Jason Langridge’ web site and I thought I’d pass it along as an FYI.  He had a customer ask how they could change the device names of Windows Mobile 6 devices to align with their PC/Laptop naming conventions.  So he provided the following tip:

On a Windows Mobile 6 Professional device you can change the device name in Start..Settings..About and then select the Device ID Tab.

On a WM6 Standard (Smartphone device) using Vista you can name a device on the 1st pairing to the Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC). You cannot rename it afterwards from WMDC, but you can do this in Explorer if it is paired to WMDC. Just browse to My Computer, right click on the device (or select and press Enter) select properties and you can rename; if you disconnect and then reconnect the new name is reflected in WMDC as well.  There does not seem to be a way to do this on the phone itself, but if I remember correctly you could never do this on SmartPhone, only on PocketPC…

Both PocketMac and Missing Sync have been around for years, so I'm surprised that they don't support the entire 10.x line. You might try asking the developers if they have any older versions that work.

But can't you just upgrade to 10.4 without buying a new computer?

I'd also suggest asking in the forums for two reasons:

    * This article really has nothing to do with Macs and you're kind of hijacking it.
    * This is a blog article which gets harder to find as it gets older. Forum posts get moved to the top of the New Posts queue whenever somebody posts a reply.

thanks for the tips. i tried both but neither will work with my mac because they require mac 10.4 or higher and mine is 10.3.9. any other ideas short of buying a new computer?
  • I forgot that one Pony99CA. Good tip!

    There's also PocketMac. http://www.pocketmac.net/
  • The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile lets you easily connect and synchronize Windows Mobile Smartphones and Pocket PCs with your Mac.

does anyone know a way to make a windows mobile 6 device compatible with a mac?
  • I just got my first WM6 smartphone and am finding that to be true Pony99CA. Not that it is a big deal, it is just something I want to reflect ... I hate seeing that Naming convention.

My device was saying WINDOWSMOBILE56 so I changed it to MotorolaQ9m. Now it says Motorola49. At least I have Motorola....

I don't think Windows Mobile Device Center allows changing the actual Device Name/ID, though. It changes a description of the device.

You could always change the device name on a Smartphone (or Pocket PC) by editing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Ident\Name in the registry, though. However, with Vista Windows Mobile Device Center, that doesn't seem to stick. I keep getting WINDOWSMOBILEnn instead.
