Launch Opera Mini with the Tilt’s IE Button

Recently, while on vacation and without a desktop Internet connection, I relied on my Tilt for access to the rest of the world. While Internet Explorer is fine for most tasks, I discovered Opera Mini and fell in love with its incredibly fast performance and more robust feature-set. However, since it is a Java midlet that runs from the built-in JBed Java midlet manager, I got tired of the multi-step process of digging down and opening JBed, and then selecting Opera Mini.
After some searching, I found a way to launch Opera Mini from the “Internet Explorer” button on my Tilt.
First, use Word Mobile to create a file that contains the following:
26#\Windows\jbed.exe -run sX_
Where X will be a number (in my case, it was a 7). If you launch JBed (listed simply as Java and located by default under Start > Programs > Tools), look at the list of applications and count in order from the top (starting with 0) and count up to where Opera Mini is listed. Use that number for X and then save the file as plain text with an “.lnk” extension.
Word Mobile will still add a “.txt” extension after .lnk, so just rename it with File Explorer (or, in my case Total Commander CE). I called the file “Opera Mini.lnk.”
You may need to fiddle around with the number for X, as I found that the counting trick to determine Opera Mini’s number isn’t always consistent.
Next, place the new .lnk file in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs.
Go to Start > Settings, and then under the Personal tab tap the Buttons icon.
Under the Program Buttons tab, make sure Button 1 is highlighted, and down below, where it says “2. Assign a Program,” use the drop-down and select “Opera Mini” (or whatever you named the shortcut). Then select OK.
Now you will be able to directly launch Opera Mini from your Internet Explorer button.
