Recently, while on vacation and without a desktop Internet connection, I relied on my Tilt for access to the rest of the world. While Internet Explorer is fine for most tasks, I discovered Opera Mini and fell in love with its incredibly fast performance and more robust feature-set. However, since it is a Java midlet that runs from the built-in JBed Java midlet manager, I got tired of the multi-step process of digging down and opening JBed, and then selecting Opera Mini.

After some searching, I found a way to launch Opera Mini from the “Internet Explorer” button on my Tilt.

First, use Word Mobile to create a file that contains the following:

26#\Windows\jbed.exe -run sX_

Where X will be a number (in my case, it was a 7). If you launch JBed (listed simply as Java and located by default under Start > Programs > Tools), look at the list of applications and count in order from the top (starting with 0) and count up to where Opera Mini is listed. Use that number for X and then save the file as plain text with an “.lnk” extension.

Word Mobile will still add a “.txt” extension after .lnk, so just rename it with File Explorer (or, in my case Total Commander CE). I called the file “Opera Mini.lnk.”

You may need to fiddle around with the number for X, as I found that the counting trick to determine Opera Mini’s number isn’t always consistent.

Next, place the new .lnk file in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs.

Go to Start > Settings, and then under the Personal tab tap the Buttons icon.

Under the Program Buttons tab, make sure Button 1 is highlighted, and down below, where it says “2. Assign a Program,” use the drop-down and select “Opera Mini” (or whatever you named the shortcut). Then select OK.

Now you will be able to directly launch Opera Mini from your Internet Explorer button.

I am running the wm 6.0 on my tilt. I tried to install Operamini 4.1 and it would not install. What version are you using on your tilt?

    Thanks

I have tried every from suite s0_ all the way up to s9_ with similar results as Justin. I also obly have Opera Mini in java. Anyone have any luck with this? Anyone know of any other good java apps so I can try with multiple options?
  • You may have to up the number from s0 to s1, s2... etc. until you find the right combo. Let me know what happens.
  • Justin
I keep getting the message "could not find suite s0_" but opera mini is the only program in java

Did anyone else get the 'beachball' icon and a loooooong timeout when pulling up the Windows folder in file explorer?

I tried a soft/hard reset and deleted the operamini.lnk file but it still took 15 mins before the windows folder was pulled up...

    Great First Post Julio!

AWESOME tip! Thanks! I've wanted to put Opera Mini on that IE button since I bought this phone. I didn't think it was possible.
  • J, I imagine it would, if all AEButtons does is activate programs on the basis of press / press-hold of a button. Thanks for the tip on the program, I will be checking it out!

I wonder if this would work with AEButtons, because then you can have single click for Opera and double-click for IE. Right now I have single click Java and double-click IE.
