More than One Million Messages Traded in First Month

Extending the Facebook platform, Social.IM turns your Facebook friends, colleagues and acquaintances into IM contacts on your desktop. Social.IM today announced that it has gained significant traction with the Facebook community in just one month since its initial beta launch. Social.IM users are highly engaged, with over half using the product every day, and have exchanged over one million messages since launch. The growth in Social.IM members and conversations can be attributed to strong member word-of-mouth about the application and its software availability for Windows, Mac, and Linux users.

“Social.IM allows me to be connected to my Facebook friends 24/7 so that I can chat with them and see what they’re up to all at the same time,” said David King, a Social.IM user and Facebook member. “I no longer have to worry about logging onto AIM or Google chat to talk to my friends because they are now all on one universal list.”

In its growing popularity, Facebook is a constant in the lives of you and your friends, irrespective of what e-mail, or IM, service you use. But the Facebook experience is still not real-time: it is still a series of back and forth interactions, rather than an ongoing conversation. Social.IM changes all of that by bringing Facebook to the desktop for an always-on connection to your Facebook world.

“The success of Social.IM can be attributed to the overwhelming need for a messaging application that brings real-time chat to Facebook,” said Social.IM CEO Yan-David Erlich. “Prior to Social.IM, chatting with Facebook friends was a multi-step process. Social.IM solves this problem because friends on Facebook automatically become friends on Social.IM. We’re excited about the communication opportunities Social.IM can bring to Facebook and can extend to other social networks.”

Social.IM is currently one of the 10,000 to 15,000 applications now available on Facebook. Unlike most of the other Facebook applications, however, the recently launched Social.IM fills the need for a communication mainstay: instant messaging. The application is easy to download and can be installed on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. Some of Social.IM’s features include:

  • Turning your social graph into your IM buddy list – new Facebook friends are automatically integrated into your Social.IM buddy list
  • Status – identifies when your Facebook friends are available, busy or offline
  • Ambient notifications – users are notified when they get new pokes, friend requests, or messages and when their friends update their status or write on the user’s wall

The Social.IM application is available immediately. Individuals can install the application by visiting http://social.im or by searching for “Social.IM” in the Facebook application directory. In the future, Social.IM plans to integrate with other social networks as well as with legacy instant messaging services.
