I've set up quite a few twitter accounts that I use from time to time to post announcements to a wide audience (my students). It works really great. But I've turned off the cell phone texting option and I don't have messages popping up on my computer all day long - that would be too distracting. It's much better to head to twitter for the news I want. Seem like this would be the typical preference, but I do know others really enjoy the whole IM thing. From what I have seen of it, it would drive me crazy in no time. I use RSS, but, personally, I love web services like Google Reader or Bloglines so that I can sit at any device I like and see the stories that I haven't had a chance to read yet.
