I think that often what makes a device just that much better are the accessories that you can buy to get that little “extra” from the device. I have been fortunate to have had a slew of different devices over the years and one thing that I always liked about my first few iPAQs was the cradle that always came with it. It just made it a little nicer for your desktop to avoid some “clutter” and it was definitely a whole lot easier for that instant hookup for charging when at home.

So recently I got a hold of a Motorola Q9m which has turned my opinion of a smartphone around 180 degrees. It is an absolutely incredible device providing me with virtually every function I wanted on my “touch screen” devices but now I have those functions on a “non-touchscreen” device that has a very slim form factor. If I am only going to take one device with me, it has become my device of choice. Of course I have too many devices and having wires all over the place for charging I decided that I was going to rearrange how and where I charge my devices but I wanted to keep the Q9m near me while at my desktop. So I looked to see if there was a cradle and sure enough there was.

When it arrived, it was a little bigger than I expected but its smooth flowing design offsets the size and looks great next to my PC. The Q9m slides easily along a track and plugs into a side mounted USB male plug for charging. It sits slightly angled on the cradle allowing for easy and comfortable viewing while it is being charged. Behind the actual cradle portion is a slot for a spare battery that I contemplated getting but decided to not get a battery (you will see why later). The rear of the cradle has a female USB connection to attach the charger plug.

So charging at home is now going to be easy and I will have my device nearby as I am working. I like it a lot and it is definitely is going to fill a need but I still needed to solve the issue of being able to make sure I have enough power to run my device if I end up being away and have heavy usage. I though about getting a spare battery and that would solve the problem of running out of power while on the road. But the truth of the matter is that generally I have been able to solve that issue using a car charger for my devices. Of course Motorola uses a slightly more powerful charger and my USB charger just did not produce the power needed so I decided I wanted to add one more charger to my car’s console and was about to get a DC charger when I saw that they had a Travel Pack that was going to absolutely solve virtually every need I would have. So what comes with the Travel Pack? There was the DC Car Charger that I wanted but in addition there was an AC charger, a Charger Adapter cable and a very cool Motorola P790 Portable Charger which eliminates the need for a spare battery and can be used to charge other USB devices …. ah, the best of both worlds!

The DC charger works great! It now sits in my console so I can always top off my device while driving. The AC charger was a neat addition so I can keep a charger in my “gear bag” and always know I will be able charge when on the road and staying at a hotel. But the P790 Portable Charger was very cool! It is small enough to stick in your pocket so when you are away from the car and an AC plug, you can charge your device and always know that you have spare power at the ready!

How well does it work? Pretty darn good! I charged my Q9m while at the Boston Bruins game the other night after doing a lot of “surfing” between the 1st and 2nd periods. I plugged it in and let it sit in my pocket and within a short period of time, my device was “topped off” and ready to go. The only draw back is the difficulty of plugging it in directly. It is a bit cumbersome and having it in your pocket is somewhat precarious but that is where the adapter cable comes in real handy. It provided the flexibility I needed to have the device charging and rest comfortably and safely in my coat pocket. Now, would I charge this way all the time? Probably not but it is nice to know that I can.

So how many charges do you get with the P790 Portable Charger? I did charge the Q9m and my 8525 when both were drained and still had power left although I am not quite sure if there was enough to get another full charge. But knowing that I have two full charges plus a little more is very comforting.

All in all, the cradle is an excellent addition to my desktop displaying a terrific device and the accessory pack really fulfills a need for “power on the go” in virtually any environment you find yourself in.

PROS

  • Cradle – neat design and appearance
  • P790 Portable Charger – small, lightweight, absolute security for a charging solution
  • AC and DC power adapter – well made, functional
  • Charger Adapter cable – provides flexibility for charging and allows multiple device charging

CONS

  • Cradle – a little big (but not a deal killer)

You can find the Cradle and Travel Pack here at the Motorola Store.

Just enter Q9m cradle or P970 Travel Pack in the Search MotoStore in the upper left corner.

Not bad. I sync with my laptop so a cradle isn't that big a deal to me, but that DC charger looks pretty unique.

I do live on the edge of cell coverage so my phone's battery takes a beating. On Friday I bought the extended battery from Verizon. You lose some of the slim, but it's nice to know that I have that extra battery charge. The standard battery was definitely have trouble getting through the day.

Nice review. I didn't even know that this stuff existed.
